General History

Noted as comprising a 240 acre manor named Lamintone in the doomsday book, its name was changed to Lemington Priors in the 16th Century. Following on from the popularity of Bath and Cheltenham for healing waters, the local saline waters lead to significant development of the town in regency and victorian times, giving it much of the splendid architecture that it enjoys today. The current full title of Royal Leamington Spa was gained by permission of Queen Victoria in July 1838.
